The CJH3 Memorial Scholarship fund was established to commemorate the life of Charles Harbin, III by providing financial assistance to help college students with limited financial resources achieve high academic goals. Charles, a.k.a Harbs, found his calling in education and this scholarship serves as a keynote remembrance of him and his dedication to his students.

The Scholarship is awarded annually to selected students in an amount ranging from $1000 – $1500 for each recipient, to be used towards college tuition and fees.

Jarrell Joseph – The Transition to College Life

“The first semester of school has been great! The transition was rough due to the increase in my workload, but that’s what I expect as a civil engineering major. Dorm life has been great as well, I have met so many new people and become friends with them.

I participated in the GSU Show of Strength competition, and I won first place in my weight class. During the second semester, I plan to continue to concentrate on academics and involve myself as much as I can in the activities offered at Georgia Southern.”

The Drake House Connection

Charles Harbin was tutoring children in transition at The Drake House last summer before he was killed. He described his experience there with the students as moving and enriching… he talked very positively about the kids and the program.

If you’re not already familiar, The Drake House in Roswell provides short term crisis housing, assessment and support to homeless mothers and their children. A few of the many services they provide include career and financial counseling, tutoring for the children, daycare to assist with finding employment, health services and mentorship. It was established to keep the family intact, and provide them with the resources to return to self-sufficient housing.

I ended up at Drake House pretty unexpectedly this week as part of a community program I’m involved with. It was jarring to be in this space where my brother taught and had talked so much about – and it was heartening to hear Programs Director, Christy Merritt, talk about the life changing work they are doing by teaching, supporting, encouraging and strengthening these families.

Madison Midkiff – The College Experience

Madison Midkiff, 2012 CJH3 Memorial Scholarship winner, shares an update on her first semester at Georgia College and State University.

“So far, college has been quite the experience. I had no idea how much work would need to be put into each of my classes. Luckily, I’m finally starting to find my stride! I just had registration for spring semester, so I’m very excited to start learning some new subjects soon!”

“I’ve been home a couple of times, but usually I’m really busy here! I pledged Kappa Delta, so there’s almost always something going on! I’m really excited to start working with Kappa Delta’s philanthropies, Girl Scouts and Prevent Child Abuse America.”

“I have to say that I’m loving the new found freedom that came with college! I will admit that sometimes I miss my mom doing things for me. All in all I’m really enjoying school right now, and I can’t wait to see what the next semester will bring!”

Summer Plans for 2012 Scholarship Recipient

“This summer I am working to save up as much as I can for college. I definitely have a lot of mixed emotions about going into college. I am of course both excited and nervous. I also know I am going to miss my parents so much, but I am definitely ready to be on my own and take on this responsibility.”

“My biggest goal while in college is to find something that I am passionate about so that I can one day have a career that I enjoy. I can’t wait to make new friends and experience the college life. I love meeting new people so I am sure I’ll meet many in the crowd of 20,000 people at Georgia Southern! I am also so thankful to the Harbin Family for everything they have done for me.”

It was a year ago today.

Charles Harbin’s parents, daughters, sister, family, friends and colleagues miss him and think of him daily. Our thanks goes out to our many friends and family for your support of this scholarship created as a tribute to Charles’ memory.

Take a moment to think of Charles today… sing with him, laugh with him, have a beer with him.

Summer Plans for 2012 Scholarship Recipient

“This summer, I am working maintenance for Roswell Area Park. When I am not working, I try to find time to hang out with friends before leaving for Georgia Southern in the fall. Preparing for college has been difficult because I am deciding whether to transfer from Georgia Southern after my freshman year to Georgia Tech, or enroll in an engineering program that will allow me to transfer after my sophomore year. Ultimately, I expect to have a 3.5 or higher GPA this coming year while working on campus and joining Habitat for Humanity and Circle-K (college version of Kiwanis International).”

“This summer I plan on working as much as I can to save money for this coming Fall. I have to admit that I don’t mind working so much because I’m really going to miss my job next year. I’ll be leaving for school in just a few weeks and I could not be more excited! I’m in the honors program at GCSU, and plan on rushing as well. I know the year is going to be a busy one! I can’t wait to experience college life! I’m so thankful and honored to have received this scholarship, and I’m so happy to include all of you in this step into the next part of my life.”
